Copper Top sits on the crest of a hill above the intersection of Whitney Way and Schroeder Road, with a clear view of and from the Beltline. It’s anyone’s guess how many thousands of people drive by the restaurant on a daily basis.
The Coppertop restaurant, which sits on a hill next to Vitense Golfland, is a Madison institution that has been in the Jonuzi family for 25 years. Bob Jonuzi and his cousin, Nick, took over the business from Jonuzi’s aunt in 1996.
Some customers have been coming in for the full 25 years, said Jonuzi, who estimates that 80 percent of his clientele are regulars. The restaurant also draws groups who meet there weekly. And well-known people in the community like UW athletic director Barry Alvarez and former Sen. Russ Feingold have made recent visits, according to Jonuzi.
“Everybody feels at home here,” he said. “Everybody knows everybody as soon as they walk in. It’s like a gathering place.”
The atmosphere is spacious and clean, with serene, floral-patterned maroon booths and carpeting.
“Ninety-five percent of our food is homemade,” says Bujar “Bob” Jonuzi, co-owner with cousin Nexhmi “Nick” Jonuzi of the Copper Top, which shares a parking lot with Vitense Golfland just off the West Beltline where Schroeder Road and South Whitney Way intersect.
There’s a large picture of a beautiful lake with mountains in the background hanging on the wall behind the checkout area at Copper Top. It’s the homeland of the owners, with the lake on the border of Albania and Macedonia.
“We’re Albanians from Macedonia,” says Bob Jonuzi. “It’s where Mother Teresa was. She was born there.”
Each day, the specials are written in multicolor on several big signboards.
